October 30, 1923 - August 30, 2021
Latane Powell, 97, of Ozark, AR died Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Ozark. She was a retired elementary school teacher and member of First Christian Church in Ozark. She was preceded in death by her parents Eulas and Garner Andrews of Cecil, AR, husband Norman Powell of Ozark, AR, and brother Billy Hall Andrews and wife Jackie Andrews of Cecil, AR, and nephew G.L. Andrews. Latane was born in Cecil, AR on October 30, 1923. She attended elementary school in Cecil, AR and high school in Branch, AR. She graduated from The College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, AR, after which she taught school in the Ozark School District for 40-years. Latane spent her days sewing, among other things. She was widely known for sewing pot holders and denim work gloves and sharing them with everyone she knew. She found purpose in her sewing and loved giving gifts and sharing with others. She also found great pleasure in going to lunches, garage sales and thrift stores with her nieces Sandy Blevins, Lynda Molton and Donna Lowrey and her Sunday lunches with niece and nephew Linda and Joe Halmes. She loved spending time with extended family and loved ones, and cracking some fantastic jokes! Latane remained in excellent health and was still driving until October 2020 when she broke her hip. She had a perfect driving record, never having a citation or at-fault accident! Following her broken hip she lost some independence, but continued sewing her pot holders to the end. She was an incredibly resourceful lady who did not hesitate to call “the law” in the latter years of her life. Not to be forgotten is the time she dialed 911 because there was a tarantula on her wall; and for the time she put Dawn dish soap in her dishwasher to add a little extra cleaning power - causing bubbles to flow out and flood her kitchen! She is survived by her son David Powell of Fayetteville, daughter Rozan Powell of Fayetteville, grandson Ben Oates of Fayetteville, granddaughter Brook Criner and husband Terry Criner of Fayetteville, two great-grandchildren Emily and Willow Oates of Fayetteville and countless extended family members who remained a daily and weekly presence to the end of her life. She was a staple in the community and will be sorely missed but remembered with great love and fondness. A private graveside service is planned due to the ongoing Covid outbreak, with a memorial service following in the coming months.
