Winifred Morrison

Winifred Morrison, age 101 years, 6 months, and 6 days, of Alma, Arkansas, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in Alma. She was born on September 26, 1923, in Bristol, England, to George James Hook and Winifred Mary Baker Hook. Winifred had four years of college by the time she was 19 years of age. World War II came, Germany bombed England at night, and they called it the Blitz. She took cover and found a building that once stood next door was gone; all while carrying the eldest son in her arms. She became a war bride and came to America in 1946, pregnant with a second son and holding her firstborn son in her arms. While leaving her family in England, she waited on Ellis Island before she could enter the United States. She would not see her family in England again for 16 years. Winifred would later have three more children. She returned to America after the 1964 visit. She later married Darold. Winifred was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ozark. She was the co-owner of the Coast to Coast Hardware Store and served as the Preschool Director at Calvary Baptist for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Colin Read. Winifred is survived by her husband of 57 years, Darold Morrison; two daughters, Donna Smith and husband Stephen, and Diane Pepe; two sons, Adrian Read and wife Diane, and Dallas B. Read; 17 grandchildren: Sheri Hickey, Heather Faulkner, Derek Read, Dan Smith, Michele Smith, Melissa Stucky-Smith, Tammy Adkinson, Lisa Read, Phillip McIlroy, Mary McIlroy, Sharah Gerak, Anna Marie McIlroy, Jordan McIlroy, Rebekah McIlroy, Jeshanah McIlroy, Netanya Trotter, and Michael McIlroy; 20 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Shaffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Ozark, Arkansas, with Brother Evan Blackford officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.
