William "Bill'' Sowell

William Chesley “Bill” Sowell, 83, of Ozark, Arkansas, formerly of Fort Smith, Arkansas died Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in Fort Smith. He was born August 19, 1929, in Olive Branch, Mississippi to William Chesley and Athene Brigance Sowell. He was a retired Crawford and Company Insurance Adjustor and past President of the Fort Smith Claims Association; a member of the Grenades Chapel United Methodist Church, a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and an ordained Elder of the Presbyterian Church; a lifetime member of the Fort Smith Boys Club Alumni Association and coached Little League Boys Club Baseball for thirty years; a member of Buffalo Buzzards Canoe Group. He played for the Detroit Tigers Minor Baseball League System. He was a graduate of Memphis State University, and a graduate of Northwest Mississippi Jr. College. He served with the 31st Infantry Dixie Division in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucy King Sowell, of Ozark; a daughter, Kristi Williamson and her husband, David, of Muldrow, Oklahoma, a son, Monty Sowell, and his fiance, Christi Moss, of Springdale, Arkansas; a son, Scott Sowell, and his wife Lynn, of Fort Smith, Arkansas; his grandchildren, Kallie and Kourtney Williamson of Muldrow, Oklahoma; Kaitlin Sowell of Russellville, Arkansas; and Evan and Abby Sowell of Little Rock, Arkansas; step grandchildren, Michael and Kayleigh Anderson of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Ashley Anderson of Fort Smith, Arkansas; a step great grandchild, Taylyn Anderson of Greenwood, Arkansas; a sister, Betty Ward, of Olive Branch, Mississippi; several nieces and nephews; and one special grandniece, Blair Mefferd. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Reverend Mark Cloninger and Reverend John Noggle officiating, and burial will be at Duncan Cemetery in Ozark, under direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends 10:00 – 11:00 AM before the service. Pallbearers are David Williamson, David Savage, Mike Paxton, Loren Ward, Adam Wood, Randy Mefford and Michael Anderson. Honorary pallbearers are George Sims, Jerry Glidewell, Amir Abdul-Khaliq, Dr. Charles Jennings, Honorable Robert Dawson, Toby Breeden, and Frank Taylor Cox.
