Mathew Joseph Post

Mathew Joseph Post, age 97 of Altus, Arkansas, died Thursday, October 20, 2022 surrounded by family in Altus. He spent his childhood on Saint Mary’s Mountain, attended high school at Subiaco Academy and graduated in 1943. Later that year Matt was drafted into the U.S. Navy-Medical Corps for three years of active duty in the Pacific arena where he became a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class and when honorably discharged he returned to St. Louis University to pursue a medical degree like his brother Dr. Jim Post. He later joined his father at the family winery as a fulltime grape grower and winemaker and was soon running the business after his father had passed. Matt was born March 15, 1925 in Altus to James “Jake” and Agnes Sax Post. He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Thomas Post and Eugene Post. Matt is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Marie “Betty” Duerr Post; seven sons, Matthew Post Jr. and wife Karla of Russellville, Arkansas, Paul Post and wife Veronica of Altus, Peter Post and wife Bernadette of Morrilton, Arkansas, Thomas Post and wife Rhonda of Harrison, Arkansas, Andrew Post of Altus, John Post and wife Lydia of Altus, and Joseph Post and wife Debra Lynn of Altus; five daughters, Agnes Marie “Amy” Sexton and husband Tom of Altus, Rosemary Post and husband Bill Gregg of Little Rock, Arkansas, Suzanne Post of Altus, Elizabeth Christina “Tina” Post Lyons and husband Joseph Lyons of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Jacqueline Scalise and husband Mark of Fayetteville; six siblings, Katherine Graham of Washington, Missouri, Louise Ritter of New Orleans, Louisiana, Theresa Shaw of Stockdale, Texas, Dr. James Post of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Antonia “Toni” Plugge of Dallas, Texas, and Estella “Stella” Conatser of Ozark, Arkansas; forty-three grandchildren; and thirty-one greatgrandchildren. Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. followed by Rosary at 5:00 P.M. Sunday October 23, 2022 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 5118 St. Mary’s Lane Altus, followed by a prayer vigil until his funeral mass. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M. Monday October 24, 2022 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Altus, with Father Reginald Udouj officiating, with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.
