Carl Irvin Day

Carl Irvin Day of Alix, Arkansas, died Friday, August 10, 2018, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was a retired teacher of 29 years at Altus-Denning Schools, a school bus driver, cattle farmer, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Ozark. He was born August 3, 1937, in McNeil, Arkansas, to Seldon and Mary Gilbreath Day. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Samuel and Louis Day; and a granddaughter, Angela Payne. Carl loved his family and particularly enjoyed attending the sporting events and performances of his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Baseball was his passion; he spent many hours both playing and watching his favorite sport. Music was very important to Carl; he loved singing hymns and listening to classic country music. He enjoyed being outdoors – hunting, fishing, and gardening – as well as traveling with his loving wife, Alice. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Alice Jane Shook Day; four daughters, Kathy Payne and husband Steve of Alix, Arkansas; Brenda Minks and husband Danny of Dover, Arkansas; Carla Parrish and husband John of Manila, Arkansas; and Nancy Harrell and husband Tim of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; a brother, Lynn Day and wife Kathey of Alix, Arkansas; two sisters, Mona Ming of Hartman, Arkansas and Ada Sanderson and husband Gary of Greenwood, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren: Robert Payne and wife Chanel, Amanda Lankford and husband Daniel, Ben Payne, Alicia and Elaina Minks, Dalton, Jessica, Brandon and Nathan Parrish, Henry, Peter and Charlie Harrell; two great grandchildren, SJ Lankford and Kinley Payne; and a large and beloved extended family. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church in Ozark with Brother Coyce Couch and Brother Michael Johns officiating. Burial will take place at Houston Cemetery in Alix under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark. The family will visit with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 14, at Calvary Baptist Church. Serving as pallbearers are Robert and Ben Payne, Dalton Parrish, Daniel Lankford, Steve Payne, Danny Minks, John Parrish and Tim Harrell. Honorary pallbearers are Brandon and Nathan Parrish; Henry, Peter, and Charlie Harrell.
